Freedom Builders Stories
Scott's Story — Freedom Builders Local Mission Week
After retiring in 2009, I learned about Freedom Builders Ministry through our church. I have always been a “do-it-yourself” individual, and post-retirement, I found that I had a lot of free time. This provided the perfect opportunity to join Freedom Builders Mission Week.
During Freedom Builders Mission Week, I was assigned to work on an elderly woman’s home—she was dealing with serious medical problems and had a disabled son. I found joy in working with Freedom Builders to bless this family in need. I was also grateful for the opportunity to work alongside high-quality volunteers with whom I could enjoy a week of fellowship.
This experience prompted me to serve in dozens of additional Freedom Builders projects—during many of these projects, I had the opportunity to meet the family in need, giving me the chance to hear story and pray with them. Some of these families and individuals faced seemingly insurmountable difficulties, leaving them with no place to turn for help. Freedom Builders offered these individuals hope by repairing their homes and sharing the love of Jesus.
I find a great deal of joy serving families in need and working in camaraderie with other Freedom Builders volunteers. Oftentimes, I feel that I am being blessed even more than those that we serve! At these times, I remember Jesus’s Matthew 5:16 call to serve others: “...let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Praising our Father in heaven, I remember, is our purpose behind serving others.
As I continue to serve with Freedom Builders, I find that the community’s needs are great. This leads me to explore ways that we can engage more volunteers willing to share their time, talent, and treasure. All of these gifts greatly help the hurting people in our local community.
